There are five main Channel Islands, Jersey , Guernsey , Alderney , Sark and Herm , and each has its own unique blend of wildlife. The other permanently occupied islands are Brecqhou, off Sark, and Jethou, close to Herm, but both are privately owned and impossible to visit without an invitation. Lihou, the most westerly point in the Channel Islands, is an islet joined to Guernsey by a causeway at low water and is now managed as a nature reserve. Burhou , a low-lying island just north of Alderney, is also a protected area being home to the largest breeding colony of Puffins in the Islands. As well as these main islands the archipelago is scattered with treacherous, half-submerged reefs that combine with the enormous tidal range to make the waters around the Channel Islands a mariner's nightmare. |
