Cumbria is home to the Lake District National Park, considered one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom. The area has provided inspiration for generations of British and foreign artists, writers and musicians. The highest point of Cumbria (and of the whole of England) is Scafell Pike at 3209 ft. Parts of Hadrian's Wall can be found in the northernmost reaches of the county, in and around Carlisle. |

| The culture Cumbria was predominantly Celtic until quite late, and the name derives from their name for the area, in the Cumbric language. It is etymologically connected to the Welsh term Cymru, meaning "Wales". Cumbria remains one of the most Celtic areas of England. If you like quaint villages, cafes and gift shops you will find that Cumbria has an abundance of these for you to visit. Or you might care to climb a remote gill or take to the fells to escape from the crowds. Or you might want to try a trip to one of the less frequented areas - like Wastwater, under Scafell Pike in the West of the Lake District. |

| Cumbria has an interesting history and links with such famous personalities as Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth (that lonely cloud) and Laurel and Hardy to name but a few. Cumbria appeals to sailors, climbers, walkers, and lovers of beautiful scenery alike. |
